This week, on May 21 (Thu) and 22 (Fri), I attended the ‘Billion Soul Harvest’ conference for two days. Stepping away from the busyness of daily life for a moment and being present at this spiritual gathering became a time of fresh restoration for me. Seeing so many people who are dedicating their lives to evangelism in this land, praying with tears for the salvation of even one soul, longing for God’s revival and simply being there breathing alongside them made my heart beat. Though each person came from different circumstances, seeing everyone united by one passion for souls became a great challenge and encouragement to me.
Among the many grace-filled moments of the conference, there was one that pierced my heart most deeply and moved me to tears. It was the story of ‘Decision Point,’ a youth evangelism training ministry that began in the United States. It was not about professional outside ministers breaking through the walls of schools. Instead, the ministry trains, encourages, and raises up Christian students already attending those schools to become youth evangelists themselves.
The students in the video still looked young, fearful, and nervous about standing before others. Yet when they courageously stood before their peers out of love for their classmates and boldly proclaimed Jesus Christ, God’s miracles began to happen. By the power of the gospel itself, students received Jesus, schools were transformed, and lives were changed—there were testimony after testimony of miraculous works. Watching schools that once seemed like barren ground become part of God’s kingdom through the pure obedience and love of these students reminded me once again, deep in my heart, of the way God works.
These works were not stories limited to US alone. Through this conference, we also heard amazing reports of countless souls hearing the gospel through evangelists sent throughout the UK, across Europe, and even to Korea. It reminded me of the universal Church running together with one heart, practicing love for souls across the whole world.
‘What, then, is evangelism to me?’
For a long time, the question of what it truly means to have the heart of an evangelist did not leave my mind. I realized that perhaps I had thought of evangelism merely as eloquence or some extraordinary ability. But the heart the Lord gave me was different. Just like the students in the video who looked upon their friends with love, I was reminded again that evangelism ultimately begins from a ‘heart of compassion’—a sincere love for the souls beside us.
Questions and fears still remain in me: ‘In this cold generation, how can we approach people in a real and genuine way? How should we share the gospel?’
Yet I now pray earnestly that the tears and burning hearts of the many ministers I met at the conference-who dreamed of the salvation of even one soul-would also be reproduced at the upcoming ARISE evangelism outreach next month.
God, who personally pours the love of neighbours into our hearts, I pray that when we go to that place and that time, we would not rely on our own knowledge or will, but instead truly see and love the people there through Your eyes. Just like the many evangelists who trembled yet stood with the gospel out of love for their friends, I pray that I too, though fearful and trembling, would boldly go forward with a heart of compassion that treasures the souls God have sent me to.”
