OPEN MIND

“Reuniting with Nathan” – Pastor Young Joo Lee

One Sunday, after the worship service, a foreign young man from came to our newcomers’ area. He explained that he worked as a building manager in a multi-storey building opposite our church. Through the windows, he had often seen the bright, cheerful faces of the young people coming in and out of our church. Seeing them made him want to visit, and so he finally decided to come. When it was his turn to introduce himself during the newcomers’ gathering, he became emotional and struggled to speak through his tears. After the gathering, he approached me privately and said that he wanted to believe in Jesus. So we moved to the back of the church, where I briefly shared the Gospel with him and prayed together with him to receive Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. He sincerely welcomed Jesus into his heart.

I thought it would be good to have his phone number, so I asked him for it. But as I entered the number he gave me into my phone, I discovered that his number was already saved in my contacts! What was going on? When had we met before? Surprised, I told him, “I already have your phone number!”
He then explained that several years ago, someone had approached him on the street, handed him a Gospel tract, and shared the Good News with him. After their conversation, he had given that person his phone number. That person had been me!

It had happened so long ago that I could barely remember it myself. When you regularly evangelise on the streets, you meet so many different people that it is impossible to remember everyone. But God had not forgotten any of them. He remembered each person and had been working tirelessly in their lives all along. I was overwhelmed with gratitude that God had led this young man, whom I had met so many years earlier, to our church. During the worship service, the Holy Spirit had touched his heart so deeply that he was moved to tears as he experienced God’s presence.

Just a few weeks ago, as he was leaving after the service, he told me with tears in his eyes how wonderful it had been when God touched his heart during the time of praise and worship. Although he occasionally misses church because of work commitments, holidays, or trips abroad to visit his parents, he has been attending faithfully for several months now. We continue to go out evangelising every Saturday. There is great joy simply in sowing the seeds of the Gospel, but often we do not get to see the visible fruit of our efforts. That is why it brings me such immense joy to see one soul, more precious than the whole world, come to church, become part of the congregation, and continue growing in faith.

My English may be far from fluent, but I am deeply grateful for God’s grace in using someone as inadequate as me to bring a soul back to Him. I have been evangelising every Saturday for the past 14 years, yet I still feel as inexperienced as I did when I first started. Because of my limited English, I often struggle to communicate the Gospel as fully and clearly as I would like. And yet, God is at work. Evangelism cannot be approached through the logic of measuring efficiency and results. We should not decide whether to evangelise based on how many people we meet on the streets eventually come to church. We do not continue evangelising because it produces measurable results. We continue because the work itself is important, regardless of the outcome.

And so, I pray: “Lord, give me a heart that treasures each and every soul even more deeply. Please continue to use someone as inadequate as me to lead more people to believe in Jesus and turn back to You.”
