OPEN MIND

“A leaf’s difference, but a completely different outcome” – Rev. Young Joo Lee

A mature and generous person can make a big problem seem small, and one who is petty can make mountains out of molehills. Naturally I don’t mean that somebody mature does is ignorant of all problems. It means that they don’t make people who are already worried even more concerned, filled with anxiety, and view the situation in a more negative light than already.

When the Moses sent out twelve men to Canaan to scout out eh land, the ten who reported that the Israelites seemed like grasshoppers to the natives, are people who make mountains out of molehills. In contrast, Caleb and Joshua stated that they needed not be afraid.

When a craftsman fixes a house, they leave it in a state even better than it was before. However, an apprentice makes more holes than there were before, and does not even finish things off properly, leaving it worse off, making people regret requesting for help.

A skilled surgeon will ensure that even with the most severe injuries, only small scars will remain, but an amateur will make mistakes even on the most simple surgeries, sometimes leading to another’s death and having to go to court.

For one whose mind is as vast as the sea, hurling insults the size of boulders will have no impact and will be swallowed up with a simple splash, after which they will go about their day as if nothing happened. However, for somebody whose mind is the size of a gutter, even a small rock will stop the flow of water and impact others around them.

A part of out body that is small, but can set our whole lives aflame is our tongue. What is also considered most active would also be the words coming out of our mouths. There are countless words that that come and go in our daily lives. When recommending something to somebody, should it have been given for the purpose and focus on helping somebody that would be the same as a craftsman or a skilled surgeon. However, if the way you express it is incorrect, you will be no different from an amateur trying to solve a problem.

In our lives, there will be many problems like COVID 19 that prevent us from doing things. In such times, if you are able to find comfort and tranquillity in the Lord, you are one who is mature. When you are faced with discourtesy or hurt by the actions of others, if you are able to able to pray to the Lord for His comfort and rise above the scars, you possess the mind the size of the sea.

Let us reflect on our year. How we did. We still have ways to go. We are amateurs, inexperienced, and akin to a gutter. We should ask for His grace once again. We should abide by His will completely. “Lord, please help us”.
