The word ‘personal’ may seem unfamiliar. However, I often use these words. ‘A personal relationship with God’, ‘God is generally a personal being.’, ‘We must respect others’ personhood!’ It might be a term commonly used in churches. Generally, it seems to be expressed as ‘consideration’ or ’empathy’.
Human relationships are a daunting task in every moment of life. In my case, having many young children who repeatedly make mistakes and errors, there are countless occasions each day that upset and anger me. Each time, it is truly challenging to guard my heart and treat my children with kind words and a gentle attitude. Moreover, having grown up without parents and siblings, I seem inexperienced in resolving conflicts arising from human imperfections. When upset, pleasant words don’t come easily, so I either try not to speak or, unable to bear it, express myself, making emotional mistakes.
When I recognize my shortcomings in relationships and feel uneasy, a prayer naturally arises within me. “Father, I truly want to emulate your godly character.” I make continuous efforts, pouring my whole heart into prolonged prayers to secure peace. Otherwise, the weight of life becomes too heavy to bear.
Thus, the greatest ability seems to be the strength to embrace the deficient, which is love. While diligence and effort may suffice for studies or work, loving people seems to require more than just effort. People inherently possess a conscience, desiring to live kindly, yet kindness and love are somewhat different. Kindness may be done even with a reluctant heart, but love cannot be without strength. Therefore, love, like an organ that needs transplantation, must be given to us as a gift from the God of love through Jesus Christ.
The ability to love others is granted to anyone who believes in Jesus, instantly receiving the capacity to love people and a new heart. Yet, just as muscles are developed through exercise, we must continually move forward with great expectations and faith in Jesus, bearing the yoke He bears and learning from Him.
The term ‘personal’ refers that which only those made in the image of God possess, which is not coerced or manipulated by others. Even if someone errs or wrongs us, instead of evolving into resentment, we should pray, guarding our hearts with God’s peace, and, even when hurt, should mercifully regard their weaknesses, striving to repay evil with good as commanded by Him. To grow into a person who practices this, we must submit our will and obedience. By clothing ourselves in the power of grace, as we interact with people with patience and bless them, the muscle of love will gradually grow within us.
Love is the highest peak of the mountain called faith. Faith is not a short-distance sprint but a long marathon. By continuously seeking Jesus Christ without rest, we will grow stronger in the grace He gives us, and eventually, just like a beautifully sculpted physique built of muscles, our character will resemble God’s. Whenever we feel the difficulties of human relationships, let’s continue to run to Jesus Christ. “Lord, I need You.”
