OPEN MIND

“Satya Naveen, who the Lord has Prepared” – Rev. Young Joo Lee

Whenever I pray about evangelism, I ask God that I experience the joys of harvesting, as well as the joys of planting. And the following events occurred last Saturday. After singing praise to God in Leicester Square, we split into smaller groups to evangelise. I was grouped with Sehyung and Inji. Not long after we began, one young man caught my attention. He was there in front of us when we had just turned a corner.

I went up to him to give out a gospel tract and he received it gladly. When I explained to him about John Harper’s story, he listened so intently that I thought he may already believe in Jesus. But when I asked ‘Do you believe in Jesus?’, he replied that he was a Hindu. So I went on to deliver the Good News. I explained that all the religions of the world promises that we can go to a good place by doing good works, but explained that it is impossible to satisfy the standards of God as He is perfect. I told him that I also believed in Buddhism in the past. Buddha was a good teacher, but ultimately, he was nothing more than a mere human being himself. The greatest realisation of my life to date was that I do not need good teachings, but a helper who can help me to live in that way.

The world has many great teachings, but the greatest problem is that we cannot abide by those teachings. However, unlike other worldly religions, Christianity states that God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to save us. In other religions, doing good works is a pre-condition for salvation. Although Christianity also emphasizes good works, it is not a pre-condition, but a result of salvation.

I also made comparisons between religions. If there really is a God, it’s only right that God should clearly reveal himself. And if that’s the case, only one of the world’s main religions can be the true religion. Christianity is based on historicity which is far superior to that of Hinduism. Buddhism arose out of Hinduism when Gautama Buddha was disappointed with Hinduism and created another branch. And whereas Islam is based on the revelations received by one individual, Muhammad, Christianity is based on the revelations of God towards an entire nation of Israel. If only one individual is the recipient of a revelation from God, it is very difficult to question or prove its authenticity. However, Christianity has an enormous wealth of historical evidence which are cohesive, consistent and reliable.

I presented the gospel in this logical way, but it is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit who can make someone believe. Finally, I read to him the Bible verses in the tract, summarised the gospel message, read through the Acceptance Prayer and asked him if he would like to accept Jesus. And he followed and accepted Jesus!

I asked him where he lived and why he was there. He came to the UK from India last year as a university student. To earn his living expenses, he comes to London by taking a train for over an hour to work in a shop nearby. His home state was the one that I had visited when I went to India. We exchanged telephone numbers and promised to meet again next week. Some branches of Hinduism acknowledge Jesus as one of their many gods, but not all of the Hindus I had encountered had done so. I sincerely hope that I will be able to meet this young man regularly and I pray that God will lead him to salvation and furthermore, build him up as a faithful disciple of Christ.

“Lord, thank you. Please help us to see the works of your salvation as we meet people on the streets who will accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour.”
