God came to me, a 1st year College student, full of questions during 1 to 1 Bible studies. I have been obsessed with Jesus ever since. At that time, as lots of college students were involved with political demonstrations we often spent a whole semester without any classes and I spent most of my time studying bible and being discipled in 2 mission organisations. I was also fascinated with John Stott, Francis Schaeffer and Martin Lloyd Jones so indulged in reading their books.
Since my conversion, I have served as a church teacher, youth group leader, church choir singer and teaching the word in mission organisations. One of the most memorable experience was demonstrating beginners LTC training course as the national representative in front of the whole participants at CCC’s national retreat as we were short of leaders.
During my 4th year at college, college clubs association organised a shamanic ritual of gut and erected a wooden totem poles called jangseung on school campus mobilising a new religious movement called Jesungsando. I led the initiative of removing these wooden totem poles from the campus which was a mission school, standing against the college clubs association which led to the public hearing involving the whole school. I advocated for our views representing the students in opposition. As I was planning and preparing to go to the Seminary I was worried that this may affect my admission but by God’s grace, I was accepted to the Seminary.
I took leave of absence from the Seminary before embarking on my studies and spent 3 years serving a small church. As I reflect on these 3 years, I am grateful for what I have learnt despite my shortfalls and lack of Seminary qualification.
I served as a student pastor in Seoul during my 3rd year at the Seminary and started full time ministry in my hometown after graduation.
I have faced various issues whilst being in full time ministry but His grace has taught me that there is power in His word. I have had church members in dispute saying they would obey today’s sermon and refrain from fighting each other.
Experiencing and seeing these difficulties first hand only grew my love for the church rather than criticising. I have dedicated my 30s serving Seogwang church as an associate pastor for 8 years.
Biggest blessing I have received while serving Seogwang church was experiencing the Holy spirit. I did not have much experience with the Holy spirit as I came from discipling course background. But I was able to correct wrong prejudices I had about the spirit as He opened my eyes and use that renewed understanding with my discipling training. Also meeting the senior pastor who was passionate about the mission and saving souls has been a true blessing and taught me that mission is the heart of ministry.
I believe He has led me here to the UK for a purpose that is not irrelevant to the mission. I long to be a good and faithful servant who gladly welcomes the Lord’s glorious return after serving in the given mission field wholeheartedly.
